The European Championships in Amsterdam for both men and women have been well underway since last weekend and with the pool stages finished, we now know the semi final line-ups and who will be fighting for the medals!
England women, after winning their opening match against Ireland, lost 1-0 on Sunday against Germany in a very close encounter but then proceeded to win their last pool game 2-0 against Scotland. With two wins and one loss this placed us 2nd in the pool behind top placed Germany and means we will face the hosts and world number one team, Holland, in the semi finals! This will be an incredible game not only because of the large crowds and atmosphere in the stadium, but the world-class hockey that will be on show. It is always a very close game, decided often by just one goal, or as on the last few occasions by a penalty shootout. Holland will certainly be on a mission to put their stamp back on this tournament by knocking out England in this semi final stage, however England being reigning champions will absolutely be ready for this challenge and want to show they can do it again.
In the other semi final, Germany face Belgium. Belgium have really focused on rebuilding their team and play over the last few years, especially after not qualifying for Rio Olympics, and they are playing some good hockey so deserve this semi final spot. Germany are more established and bring good flowing attaching hockey with threatening forwards who can score if they get those chances. Again, at the semi final stage, the match will be close however I feel Germany are better prepared for these games and will use their experience to get the result.
